This talk provides a brief overview of Internet milestones, including the 50th anniversary of the Internet in 2019, and an overview of Internet Identifiers and the Domain Name System. The talk then puts unique identifiers in context with the issue of DNS privacy, recent attacks, and the development of new protocols such as DNS over TLS and DNS over HTTPS, which enhance privacy protections but also change the landscape for various stakeholders.

Patrick Jones coordinates ICANN's Global Stakeholder Engagement activities across its regional and functional teams, working closely with counterparts in ICANN org's community-facing areas. He has been active in Internet governance, policy, technology/security and privacy areas since 2000. Patrick is an invited participant from ICANN technical staff in the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) and represents ICANN at the UN Group of Experts on Geographic Names (UNGEGN). He regularly speaks at regional Internet and DNS events on security, privacy and technology issues.
