A team led by dr hab. Michał Rupniewski, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz, submitted a project entitled “Personifikacja ekosystemów. Analiza możliwości i zasadności uznania osób ekologicznych w kontynentalnym prawie prywatnym” [Personification of ecosystems. An analysis of the feasibility and legitimacy of recognising ecological persons in continental private law], which has received funding for its implementation. The project addresses a highly topical and innovative issue concerning the rights of nature and the possibility of granting ecosystems legal personality within European private law systems.
The project is a development of ideas that emerged from spontaneous discussions in faculty corridors. My interest in human legal subjectivity, as well as in the processes transforming the very understanding of subjectivity, met with Prof. Paweł Księżak’s sensitivity to the actual and potential transformations of civil law in the 21st century. Dr Mateusz Podhalicz is interested in environmental law, including the idea of rights for nature and the project fits within reflection on this particular trend. Therefore, we have decided to work together on the OPUS competition proposal. There is a genuine research gap in this area within private law
